 September 2013

Dear Parish and School Volunteers:

The Diocese of Buffalo has in place a policy for all adults aged 18 and older within the parish and schools, who work or volunteer with children, to complete the attached paperwork and to attend a Protecting God’s Children/VIRTUS training workshop.  This includes, but is not limited to:

Cafeteria employees & volunteers

Chaperones at school events

Coaches and assistant coaches

Classroom volunteers

Youth ministry volunteers

Faith Formation volunteers

Scout leaders

Teacher aides

Room parents

Other school club volunteers and chaperones

Chaperones and drivers on field trips

Children’s liturgy of the Word

The rule of thumb is ANYONE who works or volunteers in any capacity with youth in their work as an employee or volunteer at Saint Benedict School or parish must attend a workshop.  This is a mandatory program within our diocese, which includes our school and parish.  The program was created with the best interests of our children in mind.

Check the parish or school website for a monthly schedule of upcoming local workshops.(SCHEDULE HERE)  You can pre-register for a class on-line by going to www.Virtus.org.  Once you are on the website, select “Registration” and follow the prompts to select the workshop you would like to attend. If you do not have access to a computer, you may contact me in the school office 835-2518 and we can assist you in signing up for a workshop.

In addition to the workshop, you will be required to complete brief monthly on-line Virtus training bulletins which will be e-mailed to you after attending this workshop.  You are required to read and sign a Code of Conduct Form and fill out a Uniform Volunteer Questionnaire. (LINK HERE)  Both forms are posted on the school and parish websites. It is also the policy of the diocese to conduct a background check on each volunteer.

NOTE:  IN JUNE 2013, THE DIOCESE ISSUED A NEW CODE OF CONDUCT FORM (LINK HERE).  EVEN IF YOU HAVE ATTENDED A WORKSHOP OR HAVE COMPLETED A CODE OF CONDUCT FORM IN THE PAST, ALL PARISH AND SCHOOL EMPLOYEES AND VOLUNTEERS ARE ASKED TO SIGN THE REVISED CODE OF CONDUCT FORM AND RETURN IT TO THE SCHOOL, PARISH, OR FAITH FORMATION OFFICE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

Please keep in mind that we all have the responsibility of doing what we can to protect the children within our care.  The Protecting God’s Children workshop and the continuous monthly VIRTUS training is a useful tool that can help us take that responsibility seriously.  If you have any questions, please call or e-mail me.

Thank you,
